Ideally, we would like to establish our relationship with the Gaining Freedom recipient (GFR) prior to their release from incarceration. This is not always possible, but it is our goal to be available to each GFR, prior to release so that when the GFR is released, they can hit the ground running. With that in mind, if you know someone who is currently incarcerated that is coming up on their release date in the near future, please reach out to us so that we can assist them in regaining their freedom.
MENTALLY – Being released from incarceration is a momentous occasion. It may be one of the happiest days of a released convicted felon's life. However, in some cases, although there is a measure of joy, that joy can be accompanied with anxiety and other emotional challenges, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Gaining Freedom (GF) has partnered with local mental health providers to assist in providing the needed assistance. GF will also provide a one - on - one, compatible sponsor, who has also successfully gained and maintained their freedom after being released from incarceration. This sponsor will be available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to be a support, and confidant.
ECONOMICALLY – In order to survive, it's necessary to become financially stable. We have partnered with financial institutions to assist in providing financial education. This financial education includes everything from how to budget, to how to invest, and plan for the future. In most cases gaining freedom economically also involves being able to obtain employment, therefore, GF has partnered with local employers to assist with job placement. Some individuals have the desire to start their own business, so we have consultants available to assist with getting your business off the ground.
SOCIALLY – The world is ever changing. For those who have been incarcerated for an extended period of time, even what is considered the most basic of things has somewhat changed. Perhaps one of the most common changes is with technology. We can assist with computer literacy, or whatever challenges you have, to assist you in regaining your freedom socially. It may be the case that assistance is needed in the areas of reading, writing, and arithmetic. GF is willing to help, including assistance with directing you to resources to obtain a GED. Additionally, after being released from incarceration, you may need assistance preparing for such things as an interview, or learning what government programs are available to you. GF will help you with all of these things.
DOMESTICALLY – Everyone's circumstances are different. There may be basic life skills that you need assistance with, such as how to cook, or take care of a home, obtaining a driver's license, or reliable transportation. We have volunteers happily waiting to assist.
